If the child is coming from another country, the family may need to arrange recognition of prior certificates and studies. Portugal has an official service for equivalence or recognition of foreign basic and secondary studies and certificates, and the Portuguese government states this procedure can be used to equate foreign qualifications with the Portuguese system. Procedures vary depending on the student's situation, stage and available documents.
